We empower aging people. Aging people: that’s everyone.  Build a town that works for 8-year-olds, add taller chairs, and it will mostly work for 80-year-olds.

Thanks for stopping by!

Check out what we are doing now, what we’ve done before.

NOW - Movies for grownups, benches, fire preparedness and resiliency

BEFORE - a few recent projects highlighted below; activities in each of the 8 domains of livability are described in those sections. Projects like getting sidewalks on 8th Street, crosswalks on H 133, improved walkability, improved town-wide transportation, getting complete streets included in Town Comprehensive plan - we’ve been improving the ability to age in place in Carbondale for 9 years.

Recent Success

Town Hall (more) accessible entry - after three years of bringing this issue up (Town Hall had NO accessible entry), we again presented our case to Trustees, just as the Town Manager was finally getting around to installing a temporary work around until the Town Hall redesign and rebuild will include accessible entries and workspaces for our growing town staff.

Flag Day Installation - Through a partnership with Town and Carbondale Public Arts, we purchased an installed over 60 flags from countries and states people in Caebondale are “from”. With recent political questioning of who is an American, Carbondale joined with us to declare all of us are and we embrace the contributions from all of us that make our community delightful.

BENCHES! We did an inventory of places a bench would be a welcome respite and have a plan for installing more around town as funds are available. We fundraise annually for benches and have been able to provide for 5 locations in town. The most recent are the 2 on the Rio Grand Trail near Sopris Lodge. Two on the horizon will be on the back patio at the Carbondale library. We have about 10 other locations we’d like to add benches as money allows. (Fill out our form at the bottom of this page if you’d like to donate for one. They cost $2000!)

Who
we are

What we do

We are a caucus of residents advocating public policies that support residents of all ages and abilities being fully included in our community.

Carbondale is a full-fledged charter municipality with an educated populace, two major ethnic groups, a radio station, a weekly newspaper, and less than 7,000 people. What a perfect laboratory for participatory democracy!

All Ages All Abilities All Included

Since 2019, we have connected Carbondale to The World Health Organization and AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities. “Age-Friendly” means friendly to people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.

As of July, 2019, 12 Colorado counties and municipalities belong to AARP’s network of age-friendly communities, including nearby Eagle and Pitkin Counties and the town of Fruita. The State of Colorado joined in September of 2018, when Governor Hickenlooper announced a statewide program called “Lifelong Colorado.” Carbondale is the 12th Colorado member and  the first to initiate “Age-Friendly'” at the grass-roots level.

Our work is guided by AARP’s Eight Domains of Livability:
